USFF Launches National Pool Access Initiative to Expand Freediving Training Opportunities

Los Angeles, CA December 17, 2026 — The U.S. Freediving Federation (USFF), national governing body for the sport of freediving in the United States is proud to announce the launch of a landmark initiative aimed at expanding pool access for freedivers nationwide. Beginning in January 2026, this initiative will focus on establishing a standardized set of safety protocols, training guidelines, and a certification program to enable freedivers to train in public and private pools across the country.

Since its establishment in 2018, the USFF has been dedicated to supporting the freediving community and promoting the sport in both pool and open-water environments. However, access to suitable pools has remained a significant barrier for many U.S. freedivers, limiting growth and training opportunities. By creating a clear framework and partnering with 3rd parties, the Federation seeks to make pool training more accessible and to ensure that both lifeguards and freedivers are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for safe practice.

To lead this vital effort, the USFF has appointed Matthew LaRonge of Wisconsin as the Chairman of the newly formed Pool Committee. LaRonge, an experienced freediver with an exceptional commitment to safety will spearhead the initiative. Collaborate with pool operators, lifeguard organizations, and the broader freediving community to roll out the program.

"By establishing these standards, we aim to remove barriers and open up new training venues for freedivers across the country," said LaRonge. "Our goal is to create a safer, more inclusive environment where freedivers can train with confidence, and where lifeguards feel fully prepared to support these activities."

The initiative will include developing training modules for lifeguards on recognizing and managing freediving-specific risks, as well as creating a certification pathway for freedivers who wish to use pool facilities. By working closely with partners and stakeholders, the USFF hopes to see a significant increase in pool accessibility for the freediving community starting in 2026 and over the next few years.

As the initiative kicks off, the Federation invites pool managers and aquatic professionals to participate in shaping the guidelines, ensuring that the program meets the needs of all involved.
