Maui’s First USFF/CMAS Static Apnea Competition

On 26 July 2025, Maui hosted its first official US Freediving Federation sanctioned CMAS static apnea competition. Held on Maui’s lush north shore, the event brought together seven athletes from across Hawai‘i for an afternoon of focus, personal bests, and record-setting attempts.

Competition starter Shannin Solie (Maui) kicked off the day with a white card and a new personal best. Tony Piazza (Maui) earned a white card and set a new U.S. national record in the M3 category (pending verification). Matt Brown (Maui) delivered a strong performance as well, earning a white card and setting a new U.S. national record in the M2 category (pending verification). Amelia de los Rios (O‘ahu) targeted a 7-minute hold in pursuit of breaking her existing CMAS national record of 6 minutes, 58 seconds. Though she didn’t reach her target, she still walked away with a white card. Julia Wisell (Maui) earned a white card in her first-ever static competition, and Scot Prince (Maui) also placed. Sarah Woodworth and Rochelle Zembo (both Maui) gave powerful personal best attempts.

Following the ceremony, the event hosts invited everyone to stay for a joyful post-competition celebration. Divers lounged and participated in a bubble ring session led by Amelia, who later emceed a round of “static karaoke.” The afterparty brought together athletes, friends, family, and keiki for a lighthearted close to a memorable day.

Final results and official record submissions have been forwarded to the US Freediving Federation for verification. Mahalo to Jen Brant (Head Judge) and Craig Gentry for their expert officiating, and to Rick Ortiz for timekeeping and countdowns. Special thanks to Leena Oijala for organizing, Martyna and Tony for the pool venue, and to all safety and medical team members for making the event possible.

Mahalo to all who participated and made Maui’s inaugural static competition a great success. Momentum is already building for future Hawai‘i-based competitions, including another static event and the potential for an official depth competition.
