Saturday May 8th and Sunday May 9th marks the dates for the 2021 AIDA Tampa Bay Apnea Challenge event which is being organized by Jani Valdivia. The event is being held at the Apollo Beach Racquet and Fitness Club located in Apollo Beach, Florida.

While this event was originally planned to be judged under AIDA rules, we are proud to announce that athletes have the option to be judged by AIDA or CMAS rules for the competition. This event is the first freediving pool competition in the United States which will be officially judged under both CMAS and AIDA rules.

Additionally, this is the first time that a freediving pool competition is being held in the United States under CMAS rules. The US Freediving Federation (CMAS) and USA Freediving (AIDA) are collaborating to make this historic event possible for the freediving community at large. As an athlete, you have the opportunity to compete under either AIDA or CMAS rules. No later than April 30, 2021, you must declare under which agency rules you will be performing for the entirety of the competition. To make declaration send an email to unufreediving@gmail.com.

If you choose to perform under CMAS rules to possibly achieve a CMAS national pool record, please send email to president@usfreedivingfederation.org to make record announcement and become a member. There are a number of US Freediving Federation national pool records up for grabs.

This collaboration was made possible by both organizations with the support of Jani Valdivia in the spirit of Carla Sue Hanson, a long-time supporter of freediving here in the United States.

Lastly, a CMAS Pool Judge Course is being run in connection with the event. April 21st and 28th is the online classroom, and then the judge candidates will take part in the competition for the practical. You must take part in both classroom/practical and successfully pass the test to become a US Freediving Federation CMAS national judge.
