Grow the Sport
The USFF is committed to growing the number of sanctioned competitions across the United States — from pool events in local aquatic centers to open water depth competitions in some of America's most stunning dive locations.
If you are interested in organizing a CMAS-sanctioned freediving event, the USFF will guide you through the process. Events organized under USFF/CMAS sanctioning count toward athlete rankings, can produce national records, and contribute to the growth of the sport across the country.
The USFF held its first sanctioned competition in Kona, Hawai'i in August 2018 — and in March 2026, the first ever sanctioned under-ice depth event in the United States was held in Gilbert, Minnesota. Every new sanctioned event adds to this history.
Pool disciplines — Static, Dynamic, DNF
Indoor competition · CMAS sanctioned
Static Apnea, Dynamic (Mono Fin, Bi-Fins, No Fins), and Endurance events in any standard swimming pool meeting CMAS requirements. Most accessible format for new organizers.
Open water depth events in ocean, lake, or quarry environments. CWT, CWTB, CNF, FIM, and Variable Weight disciplines. Requires suitable water depth and safety infrastructure.
An officially sanctioned event specifically organized for a national record attempt. Requires additional CMAS documentation and verification procedures. Contact the USFF president to inquire.
A training and certification event for CMAS judges. The first CMAS judge course in the US was held in Kona, Hawaii in 2018. More certified judges = more events across the country.
Depth disciplines conducted under frozen ice — CWT, CWTB, and Free Immersion. A new and growing category in the US following the historic 2026 Minnesota event.
A combined event featuring both pool and depth disciplines, or multiple pool disciplines over a competition weekend. Requires CMAS judging across all disciplines included.
